Do It Yourself Painting Tips
The painter: Select a good painter with the right reference, experience and skills.
Equipment: Obtain what is required for the job and ensure that materials and equipment are in good condition.
- Brushes, paint rollers/trays.
- Sand paper, masking tape
- Scrapper, scrubbing brush
- Mixing pallet, can opener, gloves.
- Ladder, scaffolding.
- Detergent, cloth, bucket and water for cleaning.
- Plastic sheeting and paper for covering.
Materials: Obtain your materials after estimating quantity requirements:
- Primer, sealer
- Undercoat
- Paint, varnish
- Thinners,
- Filler, putty
Surface preparation: Prepare the surface as recommended for each specific substrate.
Prepare your interior for painting:
- Remove pictures and loose items from walls
- Loose rugs and curtains
- Small items of furniture
- Door handles
- Electric switch covers after switching off electrical mains.
- Move large furniture to the Centre of the room.
- Cover furniture with plastic or paper.
- Cover surfaces such as fitted units, woodwork, skirting, etc. with plastic or paper and masking tape.
Prepare your exterior for painting: Use plastic sheeting to protect sections that could be splashed with paint: Brickwork, pathways, steps, balustrades, window sills.
Plan your interior work:
- First paint the ceiling
- Then the vertical surfaces (walls, doors, windows)
- Last paint the floors
Plan your exterior work:
- First paint the roof
- Then the exterior fittings (gutters, down pipes)
- Last paint the vertical surfaces.
Vertical surfaces: Start off with the upper sections and work downwards.
Painting
- Mix the paint well before use.
- Mix the paint occasionally whilst painting.
- Use a paint brush for corners, edges and narrow strips.
- Use a roller and tray for large surfaces.
- Select a long fibre roller for ceiling and walls.
- Select a short (solvent resistant) fibre roller for wood and metallic surfaces.
- Rub down with fine sand paper in between coats to obtain a smooth and/or glossy finish.
Safety
- Most paints and solvent fumes are flammable, keep them away from ignition source.
- Ensure good ventilation during application and drying.
- Wear adequate protective equipment.
- Remove splashes from skin with soap and water.
- In case of contact with eyes, rinse with ample water and seek medical advice.
- Keep containers tightly closed and away from children.
