New Surface
Prepare the surface by treating with Etch Cleaner. Remove residue and white rust by rinsing with water whilst brushing or sanding with 'medium' sand paper. Avoid power tools which can damage the galvanising or the Aluminium surface.
Note: Suitably weathered galvanised surfaces require no pre-treatment except for light sanding with ' medium' sand paper.
Ambient conditions such as high humidity combined with low substrate temperature can promote condensation on metallic surfaces. Under such conditions painting is not advisable and should be delayed. The rusting process on metallic surfaces will begin immediately after preparation. The surface should be primed without delay. Surface defects should be repaired with a suitable putty after priming.
Previously Painted Surface
Surface Examination
Shave the old coating in various places with a knife to ascertain the flexibility of the film and its present adhesion to the substrate. Inspect the quality of the substrate. If the old coating and/or its substrate have a tendency to powder, shatter or disbond easily under the knife or if blisters or other defects are observed, it would indicate that total removal of the old coating is advisable.
Total Removal of the Old Coating or Sections Thereof
Remove by mechanical means or by stripping with paint remover. Proceed as per specification for the preparation of new surfaces.
The Old Coating Will Not Be Removed
Proceed as per specification for the preparation of new surfaces. In this case ignore steps which require pre-treatment with Etch Cleaner and priming.
Surfaces Should Be Dry Before Painting
The above mentioned procedures may be substituted by approved international norms for surface preparation.
