New Surface
Remove oil or resin deposits by scraping or by wiping with Test-Benzin. Seal knots and pitch pockets with 'Gum-Lac' reduced equally with denatured alcohol or with G.P. Aluminium. Correct surface defects such as cracks and holes with a suitable putty. Sand down bulges with coarse sand paper. Sand down the whole surface in the direction of the grain starting with 'medium' and finishing with 'fine' sand paper. Remove dust.
Wood
should be sealed on all sides to avoid distortion. This is best done before
installation. For protection
against wood-rot, apply a generous coat of Wood Preservative Clear and allow to dry before coating.
Previously Painted Surface
Surface Examination
Shave the old coating in various places with a knife to ascertain the flexibility of the film and its present adhesion to the substrate. Inspect the quality of the substrate .If the old coating and/or its substrate have a tendency to powder , shatter or disbond easily under the knife or if blisters or other defects are observed, it would indicate that total removal of the old coating is advisable.
Total Removal of the Old Coating or Sections Thereof
Remove by mechanical means or by stripping with paint remover. Proceed as per specification for the preparation of new surfaces.
The Old Coating Will Not Be Removed
Proceed as per specification for the preparation of new surfaces. In this case ignore steps which require priming.
Surfaces Should Be Dry Before Painting
The above mentioned procedures may be substituted by approved international norms for surface preparation.
